Hydrogen can be placed in any group on the periodic table but for conviniency, it is placed in group 1 because of the single valence electron

Hydrogen can be placed either in group 7 because it is a gas like the group 7 elements and needs one electron to attain the duplet state or in group 1 because it contains one valence electron
