Equation of the reaction
5Fe2+ + MnO4- + 8H+ → 5Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O
N.B: Reduction could mean decrease in oxidation number
Oxidation could mean increase in oxidation number.
From the equation given,
MnO4- is reduced such that the oxidation number of manganese has reduced from +7 to +2 (as in Mn2+)
