the oxidation number of Al=+3
and cl=-2
so. 3+(3x)+(-2*3*3)
3+3x-18=0
3x-15=O
3x=15
divide thro by coeff of x(3)
3x/3 =15/3
x=5
so therefore oxidation number of nitrogen is +5

Here is an explanation:

giving that nitrogen is unknown we call it x.

recall that the oxidation number of aluminum is +2 and the oxidation of oxygen is -2, lets call Nitrogen x, and you equate it to 0. therefore Al(NO3)3

2+[x+(-2*3)]3=0

2+3x+(-18)=0

2+3X-18=0

3X-16=O

3X=16

X=16/3

X=5.333

so X is approx.=5
