Carbon(II) oxide is prepared from Carbon(IV) oxide by passing CO\(_2\) through red-hot carbon. Most of the CO\(_2\) becomes reduced to CO. However, the uncharged CO\(_2\) is removed by passing the mixture through concentrated NaOH, in order to collect the pure CO over water.
