When a pure sample of sulphur(iv)oxide is prepared in the laboratory by action of hydrochloric acid on sodiumtrioxosulphate(iv), heat is applied to decompose the trioxosulphate(iv)acid formed in solution to liberate sulphur(iv)oxide. The gas is dried by passing it through a wash bottle containing concentrated tetraoxosulphate(vi) acid and is collected by upward displacement of air (i.e it is heavier than air).
