Here is an explanation:

A ph scale normally reads from 1 to about 6.3 (indicating acidity) when the litmus turn red, it reads from about 6.4 to about 8.5 (indicating neutrality) when the litmus turn purple, and it reads from about 8.6 to 14.0 (indicating alkalinity) when the litmus turn blue. Hence the colour of litmus in a neutral medium is purple.

gosh...litmus is purplish in a neutral medium whereas phenolphtalein is pink in a neutal medium
