Myschool don't get us confused, Sodium does not react "vigorously" with oxygen rather it tarnishes on exposure to air due to its reaction with oxygen, water vapour and carbon dioxide forming Sodium Trioxocarbonate (IV) , thereby reducing the metallic lustre. This is the reason why Na is stored under paraffin wax.

Sodium is always stored under paraffin oil to prevent it from being oxidized by atmospheric air which constitute Oxygen, Carbon(IV)oxide and water vapour (inert gases and Nitrogen inclusive).
Sodium reacts with Oxygen to give Sodium oxide which reacts with water vapour to form Sodium hydroxide which further react with Carbon(IV)oxide to form Sodium trioxocarbonate.
To prevent these reactions is a reason Sodium is stored under oil.

Waw! Well under the chemical properties of sodium, looking at is reation with air.
