Fehlings and tollens reagent is used to distinguish alkanal from alkanones.....alkanal are good reducing agent while alkanones are not......in fehlings reagent containing copper ii complexes being mild it only oxidizes to alknal but not alkanones copper ii is reduced to copper i oxide a brick red in colour.....while tollens reagent silver trioxonitrate v solution forms brown ppt
