Modern steelmaking involves two primary steps that transform iron ore into the final product. While the initial stage of extracting iron from its ore in a blast furnace is a reduction process (using carbon monoxide to remove oxygen from the iron oxide), the actual conversion of that iron into steel is an oxidation process.
