Three drops of a 1.0 mol dm-3 solution of NaOH are added to 20 cm3 of a solution of pH 8.4. The pH of the resulting solution will?
Close to that of pure water
Unaltered
Greater than 8.4

The answer should be C
Any substance with ph of above 7 is alkaline nd NaOH is also alkaline.... So the addition of alkaline to alkaline should increase the level of alkalinity
dats my own idea
With much already said, let me just add that Option C is very Correct!
Since NaOH is a strong base with a pH between 10 to 12 and 20cm3 of a solution of 8.4 is a weak base.
Therefore when 3 drops of NaOH are added the pH is greater than 8.4, therefore, it will migrate from a weak base to strong base.
Therefore the answer is C.
#Copied but still correct.

1.0 mol dm-3 solution of NaOH are added to 20cm3 of a solution of pH 8.4(basic).NaOH is basic, hence overall pH will be greater than 8.4

how can you add a strong base to weak base and still expect the resulting solution to reduce

The correct answer is c because there was an increase in alkalinity of the system

Some answers in myschool are not encouraging
Imagine their answer saying that when a strong base is added to a basic solution the pH will decrease
That is very incorrect because the base will increase the pH further.

The 1mole/dm3 of NaOH is less concentrated and has more water molecules. So when added to 20cm3 of the other solution it reduces it's PH value.

i go with A... when NaOH is added to solution with ph 8.4
NaOH=Na+ + OH-
i adds OH to the sample
and as the pOH increases the pH decreases
so the solution with 8.4 pH decreases to almost 7(neutral or pure water)
