The following compounds are given with their corresponding boiling points.
Compound Boiling Point
i.................................14°C
ii................................24°C
iii................................0°C
iv................................120°C
V.................................-2°C
From the above information, indicate which of the following is correct?

a

All the compounds are gaseous at 20 °C

b

One of the compounds is gaseous at 20 °C

c

Two of the compounds are gaseous at 20 °C

d

Three of the compounds are gaseous at 20 °C

Option D is correct because all substances that have their normal boiling point and normal melting point below room temperature (20°c) are regarded as being gaseous at room temperature (20°c)

To solve this, remember this rule:
👉 A substance will be a gas at a temperature higher than its boiling point.
👉 If the temperature is lower than its boiling point, it will remain liquid (or solid).
We are checking the state at 20 °C.
Step 1: Compare each boiling point with 20 °C
Compound
Boiling Point
State at 20 °C
i
14 °C
Gas (20 > 14)
ii
24 °C
Liquid (20 < 24)
iii
0 °C
Gas (20 > 0)
iv
120 °C
Liquid (20 < 120)
v
−2 °C
Gas (20 > −2)
Step 2: Count the gases
Gaseous compounds at 20 °C:
i
iii
v
Total = 3 gases
✅ Correct Answer
D. Three of the compounds are gaseous at 20 °C
✔ Because their boiling points are lower than 20 °C, so they exist as gases at that temperature.
