Ordinary steel is an alloy of iron and carbon...but stainless steel is an alloy of iron ,chromium and nickel...if the question is about ordinary steel then this answer is wrong

This question could be more focused. Apparently "phosphorus" causes "embrittlement" of steel. It is the only non useful element for alloying steel. As a matter of fact, carbon is the most important alloying material used on steel.
