Deforestation is a major contributor to soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Trees act as anchors for the soil with their roots, and their canopy protects the ground from rain. When trees are removed, the soil is exposed to wind and rain, leading to severe erosion (loss of soil particles) and degradation. Deforestation destroys habitats, it does not create new ones.
