Eutrophication is a process that occurs when a water body becomes overly enriched with nutrients (primarily nitrates and phosphates), often from agricultural runoff or sewage. This leads to the following sequential trend: Excessive nitrates → massive algal growth → lack of oxygen→ death of aquatic organisms.
