The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is responsible for the body's "fight-or-flight" response. Its primary role is to prepare the body for physical action or survival by mobilizing energy and redirecting blood flow to vital organs. The SNS triggers the release of norepinephrine, which binds to alpha-adrenergic receptors on vascular smooth muscle, causing vasoconstriction. This increases blood pressure and shunts blood away from the skin and digestive organs toward the heart, brain, and skeletal muscles.
