Four cells each with osmotic potential of about 3% salt solution was immersed respectively into solutions of different concentrations as follows:
I - 1% salt solution; II - 3% salt solution; III - 6% salt solutuon; IV - 10% salt solution.
Which of the solutions will cause an increase in osmotic pressure within the cell?
1% salt solution will cause an increase in osmotic pressure within the cell because this solution has a lower salt concentration (1%) compared to the cell (3%). It is a hypotonic solution. Since water moves from areas of low solute concentration to high solute concentration via osmosis, water will enter the cell, increasing its internal volume and resulting in an increase in osmotic (turgor) pressure.
