Moulting (also known as ecdysis) is the biological process by which a cockroach nymph sheds its rigid exoskeleton to allow its body to expand and grow. Because the exoskeleton is a hard outer shell that cannot stretch, the nymph must shed it periodically—typically between 5 and 13 times—to increase in size and eventually transition into a sexually mature adult.
