Water is essential to all living cells primarily because it acts as a universal solvent and a medium. Nearly all biochemical and metabolic reactions—such as cellular respiration, protein synthesis, and digestion—occur in an aqueous environment where water allows reactants to dissolve, move, and interact with one another. Without water, the chemical processes required for growth, repair, and energy production would cease.
