The gallbladder is a small organ that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. It is connected to the biliary system via the cystic duct. When a mammal consumes fats, the gallbladder contracts and expels bile through the cystic duct, which then joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct. This common bile duct carries the bile directly into the duodenum, which is the first section of the small intestine, to aid in the digestion and emulsification of fats.
