The long-winged reproductives, also known as alates, are the only members of a termite colony equipped with wings for the specific purpose of leaving their natal colony. While they participate in swarming (the act of flying), the biological function or objective of this behavior is to disperse the population to new locations. By flying away during a nuptial flight, they find mates from other colonies and establish entirely new colonies, preventing overcrowding and ensuring the survival and spread of the species.
