Holozoic nutrition is a method of heterotrophic nutrition where organisms ingest complex organic substances (liquid or solid) and process them internally through five stages: ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and egestion. Organisms that exhibit this mode of nutrition are classified into three groups based on their diet:
Omnivorous: These organisms have a flexible and versatile diet, allowing them to feed on both plant and animal substances. Common examples include humans, bears, pigs, and cockroaches.
Herbivorous: While this is a type of holozoic nutrition, herbivores feed exclusively on plant material, such as grass, leaves, and fruits.
Carnivorous: This is also a type of holozoic nutrition, but carnivores feed only on the flesh of other animals.
Saprophytic is a separate mode of heterotrophic nutrition, not a sub-type of holozoic nutrition. Saprophytes obtain nutrients by decomposing and absorbing organic matter from dead or decaying material through external digestion.
