Saprophytes are organisms that live and feed on dead and decaying organic matter, such as stale bread, rotting fruits, and vegetables. They secrete digestive enzymes externally to break down complex organic substances into simpler molecules, which are then absorbed into their bodies. Rhizopus (commonly known as bread mold) is a genus of fungi that obtains its nutrients through a saprophytic mode of nutrition.
B. bladderwort is a carnivorous/insectivorous plant that grows in nutrient-poor environments and captures small aquatic organisms using specialized traps.
C. sundew is also a carnivorous/insectivorous plant. It uses sticky tentacles on its leaves to trap and digest insects to supplement its nitrogen intake.
D. mistletoe is a parasitic plant. It attaches to a living host plant to extract water and minerals, rather than feeding on dead matter.
