Sugarcane is primarily and most effectively propagated through stem cuttings, also known as setts. Commercial sugarcane production rarely uses seeds because they have high genetic variability and low viability. Using stem cuttings ensures that the new plants are genetically identical clones of the parent, maintaining the desired sugar content and growth characteristics. These cuttings are typically segments of the stalk containing two or three buds (or "eyes"), which are planted horizontally or vertically in the soil to sprout into new canes.
