Fertilization takes place in the upper 2/3 of the fallopian tube close to the mouth of the tube. The tube is approximately 10 cm in length and fertilization normally takes place 12 to 24 hours after ovulation; first cleavage occurs and is complete about 30 hours post fertilization (about 1/2 way down the tube); the embryo is a Morula (approximately 30 cells) at 3 to 4 days post fertilization (near the lower 1/3 of the tube); and reaches the uterus as a blastocyst at 41/2 to 5 days post fertilization; implantation occurs about 6 days after fertilization.
