A seedling was made to stand in a solution of red ink for three hours and a transverse section of the stem was examined under the microscope. The process being investigated was

a

the importance of micro elements to plants

b

ascent of water through the xylem

This is supposed to be Ascent of water through the Xylem
Answer is B
My school change it

Here, only the xylem tissue will be coloured red. This shows that xylem is responsible for upwards movement of water from the roots.
Therefore the correct answer is B.

The correct answer is B. The experiment describes the ascent of water through the xylem and the resilt is that Eosin ink stains only the xylem and not the phloem, showing that the xylem is responsible for water conduction in plants. Don't be confused dears.
Myschool please do the needful.

*Why B is actually the better answer: ascent of water through the xylem*
The _real_ process being investigated in this standard bio experiment is *capillary action + transpiration pull causing the ascent of sap in xylem*. The red ink is just a tracer to make the water movement visible. You’re not studying diffusion of the ink itself - you’re using the colored substance to track how water rises in the xylem

The stem of the young plant is semipermeable and as such the red ink is able to diffuse through it until the colour is evenly distributed

the correct answer is option c because the seedling has a semi-permeable membrane, and when standing in that solution for three hours the experiment was to test if the ink was able to diffuse well in the seedling. note that diffusion occurs in a semi-permeable membrane.
