I get the point myschool is trying to make but a virus is not a living organism. Moreover mycoplasma gentalium is a bacterium. Clearly from myschool's explanation above; the viruses were excluded, this shows they are non living things if not, they wouldn't have been excluded. For anything to be classified as living then it must possess all the characteristics of a living thing. viruses can't respire, they don't feed, they don't grow, they don't even have a cell structure e.t.c. They only reproduce by multiplying when present in living cells. Take it or leave it viruses are non living and this has inconclusively been verified.

The answer cannot be virus because the keyword in the question is LIVING. Virus arent living organisms, they only multiply in living organisms, so according to the question, the simplest living organism would be amoeba.
virus is the simplest living organism which can only respire in living tissues and also cannot be seen with any other microscope except with the powerful electron microscope
