Because the Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, contain a protein called hemoglobin, which has a high affinity for oxygen. When hemoglobin binds to oxygen, it forms oxyhemoglobin.

kudos..red blood cell(ERYTHROCYTES) aids transportation by transporting essential substances e.g hormone,nutrients etc..it consist of the HAEMOGLOBIN which is responsible for the red colour of the blood..it combines readily with oxygen-OXYhaemoglobin...
