Home » Osmosis
Definition
noun
1. Diffusion of a solvent (usually water molecules) through a semipermeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration.
2. Net movement of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential.
3. Tendency of water to flow from a hypotonic solution (low concentration of dissolved substances) to hypertonic solution (higher concentration of dissolved substances) across a semipermeable membrane

Definition
noun
The passive movement of molecules or particles along a concentration gradient, or from regions of higher to regions of lower concentration
so that means E is correct, dont worry i also got it wrong at first!

Wrong answer!!! hope.. hope I haven't been agreeing in error I don't know so far? Answer D not E

Well, there have been contradictions in the definition of osmosis, some text define it as an advanced form of diffusion while others define it in contrast to diffusion ....but practically osmosis is the movement of water molecules frm a region whr it is low to a region whr it is high

Osmosis is defined as movement of water molecules from region of low concentration (hypotonic) to a region of high concentration (hypertonic) through a semi- permable membrane. Option D is correct

low 2 high z diffusion while high 2 low true a semi-permable mebrane z osmosis,xo answer D z coret

.... looking at the explanation from Myschool you will know that the correct option is E

the ansa is d becos according to essential biology textbook " osmosis can be defined as the movement of water or solvent from a region of dilute or weak solution to a region of concentrated or strong solution through a selectively or differentially permeable membrane. it should be noted that osmosis is a special form of diffusion.
Conditions necessary for osmosis to occurs are: presence of stronger solution e.g sugar or salt, presence of weaker solution e.g distilled water, and presence of selectively permeable membrane.

D is correct but lets get the defination of osmosis well:
Here's the definition of osmosis that you will see in most textbooks: In biology, osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a *high concentration of water molecules* to a solution with a *lower concentration of water molecules*, through a cell's partially permeable membrane.
you are also saying the same thing with movement of water molecules from the region of lower concentration ( where water is much"high" but the concentration of the solution is lower compared to the other solutions) to the region of higher concentration (the concentration of water is low, that is why its called higher conc: maybe it as more of glucose compared to the other solutions for example.) Through a semipermiable membrane.
the diffrence in both defination is that, water was the refrence point in first defination and Concentration of the solution alone was just the main focus in the second defination.
thanks
