The Rhizobium bacterium in a mutualistic association with legumes converts atmospheric nitrogen , N\(_2\) into ammonia, NH\(_3\). This process, known as nitrogen fixation, provides the plant with a usable form of nitrogen essential for creating amino acids, proteins, and other vital compounds.
