of carbondioxide for photosynthesis?
During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide diffuses through the stomata into the mesophyll layer of the leaf, where the majority of photosynthesis takes place. At the same time, oxygen produced during photosynthesis diffuses out of the leaf through the stomata. This movement of gases in opposite directions is called gas exchange.
Guard cells control the size of the stomata to prevent the leaf from losing too much water in hot, dry, or windy conditions. In many plants, stomata are open during the day and closed at night.
