Amoeba is a unicellular organism that lacks specialized respiratory organs like lungs or gills. It performs gaseous exchange through its cell membrane (body surface) via simple diffusion. Because of its small size and high surface-area-to-volume ratio, oxygen from the surrounding water can easily pass into the cell, and carbon dioxide can pass out directly through the plasma membrane.
