Yes! The centrum of the axis projects forward as a structure known as odontoid process. The odontoid process fits into the ventral portion of the neutral canal of the atlas and is held in place by ligaments. In this position it allows free rotation of the atlas on the axis. Axis forms the odontiod process.

Atlas and axis permit rotary and nodding movement which process is odontoid process but axis form the bases of this process.
