What will be the colour of the solution in the test tube labelled II at
the end of the experiment?
In the experiment, test tube I contains a 5% sucrose solution with yeast, which ferments to produce carbon dioxide (CO₂) and ethanol. The CO₂ travels into test tube II, containing lime water (calcium hydroxide). The CO₂ reacts with lime water to form insoluble calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), turning the clear solution milky white, as per the reaction Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃↓ + H₂O. Thus, the colour of the solution in test tube II changes from clear to milky white at the end.
