When blood is too concentrated, the kidneys absorb more water from the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) and the descending loop of the loop of Henle. The PCT reabsorbs a large portion of the water, and this is enhanced by the descending loop of the loop of Henle, which reabsorbs water to help concentrate the urine and rehydrate the body.
The proximal convoluted tubule is the first and primary site for water reabsorption, reabsorbing approximately 70% of the filtered water. This reabsorption is largely passive, creating an osmotic gradient that draws water out of the tubule.
