Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition caused primarily by a deficiency of protein in the diet. It typically occurs in children who have been weaned from breast milk to a diet that is high in carbohydrates (such as maize, rice, or cassava) but lacks sufficient protein to support growth and repair. The hallmark symptom is oedema (swelling due to fluid retention), which often results in a distended or "pot-belly" appearance.
