Ferns and some conifers require water for fertilization because sperm cells of ferns are flagellated and need water to swim to the egg cell for fertilization.
In contrast, fungi do not require water for fertilization as they produce via spores or other mechanisms. Also, angiosperms (flowering plants) do not require water for fertilization as pollen grains are transferred through the air or by pollinators, and fertilization takes place within the plant.
