A pineapple is a multiple fruit, which means it's technically a berry that develops from many fused flowers. It's also known as a composite or sorosis fruit.
The pineapple fruit ripens five to six months after flowering begins. The pineapple fruit is juicy, sweet, and can be pale cream to yellow in colour. The scales on the outside of a pineapple are individual flowers that have fused together. The plant is a small shrub with a short stem and a rosette of waxy leaves. The flowers of the pineapple plant are hermaphrodite, meaning they have both male and female parts, but are self-sterile.
