Identical twins, also known as monozygotic twins, are formed when a single egg is fertilized by a single sperm to create one zygote. Shortly after fertilization, this single fertilized egg splits into two separate embryos. Because they originate from the exact same genetic combination, identical twins share nearly 100% of their DNA and are always the same biological sex.
