The filament of spirogyra were put into equal volumes of sugar solutions X and Y. After 5 minutes, filaments from solution X had their cells contents rounded up while those from Y were unaffected. The experiment shows that

a

solution X was stronger than Y

b

solution Y was stronger than X

c

Spirogyra used up the sugar in solution X

d

solution X is good for stimulating sexual reproduction in Spirogyra

e

solution Y was less contaminated than X

The selected answer is wrong because. It is stated in the question that the filaments in solution x had their cells contents rounded, meaning there was a great intake of water (osmosis)
Osmosis means movement of water molecules from a refund of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration. Meaning that there was a higher concentration than the solution within the filaments (the solution was hypotonic, not concentrated enough). On the other hand, filaments in solution Y were unaffected. Meaning the concentration of the solution was the same with filaments (isotonic) hence greater than solution X.
I hope myschool is smart enough to understand this.

The experiment shows that solution X is a hypertonic solution, while solution Y is an isotonic or hypotonic solution.

Here's what happened:

- In solution X, the sugar concentration is higher than the concentration of solutes within the Spirogyra cells. Water moves out of the cells through osmosis, causing the cell contents to shrink and round up.
- In solution Y, the sugar concentration is equal to or lower than the concentration of solutes within the Spirogyra cells. There is no net movement of water, so the cells remain unaffected.

why is the Answer is A?

Based on the experiment, solution X is the stronger (or more concentrated) solution. It has a higher sugar concentration than solution Y, which makes it a hypertonic solution.

In other words, solution X has a higher solute concentration than solution Y, causing water to move out of the Spirogyra cells through osmosis.

So, in terms of strength or concentration, solution X > solution Y.

note this! for a cell to round up also means to shrink or to decrease in size.

I hope this helps!

A is correct here✍️👽

For X to round up means it's more concentrated than the solution, while y remained the same which means it had Same concentration with the solution (isotonic)

The problem lies in the meaning of round up

It was rounded up because the x solution is stronger which makes it to be rounded up or shrinked hence the other is affected. so X is greater than Y

The correct answer is A. solution X was stronger than Y.

The experiment demonstrates osmosis. The cells in solution X shrunk and had their contents rounded up, indicating that solution X is hypertonic (has a higher solute concentration) compared to the cell sap of Spirogyra. Solution Y, on the other hand, had no effect, suggesting it is isotonic (has the same solute concentration) or hypotonic (has a lower solute concentration).

I finally figured it out,it was rounded up be

x is stronger cuz it was rounded up meaning it moved away from the cell wall

the correct interpretation of the experiment is:

**A. solution X was stronger than Y.**

This is because the cells in solution X rounded up, indicating that it was a hypertonic solution, causing water to move out of the cells. In contrast, the cells in solution Y remained unaffected, suggesting that it was either isotonic or hypotonic relative to the cells of Spirogyra.
