Microorganisms that decompose organic matter, also known as decomposers, function best under optimum soil pH. Soil
pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. An optimum pH level (close to neutral, pH 7) allows for the best
growth and functioning of these microorganisms. Waterlogged and anaerobic soil conditions, as well as low soil
temperatures, can inhibit the activity of these microorganisms.
