Study the methods of restraining animals labelled I -IV as illustrated by the diagrams below and use them to answer questions (a) - (d)

   

(a) Describe briefly the effect of each type of restraining method on farm animals.

(b)(i) State when each of the restraining methods is required in animals.
(ii) Give one reason why an animal restrained using method ll will take instruction from the herdsmen.
(iii) Which of the restraining methods is most suitable for drenching an animal.

(c) State three reasons why it is necessary to restrain farm animals.

(d) If an animal is to be given 50ml streptomycin for curative treatment per week, how many weeks will it take the animal to complete a 250ml dose of streptomycin?

Explanation

(a) Effects of each of the restraining methods on the animal; 

  • The animal cannot move its head/mouth or will not be able to move its head or mouth
  • The animal will move only in the direction of the rope or chain
  • The head and body of the animal are not free and cannot move
  • The animal will not be able to walk fast or freely

(b)(i) When each restraining order is required;

  • During drenching/inspection of animals treatment. 
  • During change of station or pen/ change of direction.
  • During treatment or drug injection or routine vaccination / slaughtering / drenching.
  • In the market or farm where movement of the animal is to be restricted.

(ii) A bull restricted as shown or illustrated by diagram Il will take instruction from the herdsman for fear of tearing its septum ( nose)
(iii) The method most suitable for drenching an animal is illustrated by diagram ll.

(c) It is necessary to restrain animals to prevent injury to the handler | herdsman; for easy operation, e.g. treatment; in order to tame or calm wild ones; to control animal movement, grazing e.t.c.

(d) If the animal is to receive 50 ml streptomycin a week, the animal will complete a bottle of 250 ml streptomycin in \(\frac{250}{50}\) weeks = 5 weeks
