Study the diagrams below
(a) ldentify the implements represented by diagrams l and ll above.
(b) List three important parts of each of the implements illustrated by diagrams I and lI
(c) State one function of each of the parts of the implements listed in (b)
(d) State:(i) one major advantage in using the implement illustrated by Il:
(ii) one major disadvantage in using the implement illustrated by I.
Explanation
(a) Implement I is Mould board plough/ plow while implement lI is Disc plough /plow.
(b) Important parts of each are:
- I - Coultier /vertical disc; shore / share point mould board: beam/frame; standard.
- II - Concave disc / disc: sledge / knife / scrapper, rotating hubs disk bearing bearing: spring: beam / frame, balancing disc / furrow wheel; beam cap; coupling point / hinge / linkage point, Standard
(c) Function of each part listed;
I;
- Coulter makes vertical cuts/furrows;
- Share makes horizontal cuts/uproot weeds;
- Mould board carries the soil, inverts the weeds and exposes the roots of the weeds;
- Standard bears the mouldboard and Share
- Beam/Frame carries the plough and other components / proves additional weight for greater depth
II;
- Concave disc rotates and makes vertical cuts / horizontal cuts as the tractor moves forward / inverts the soil.
- Scrapper /knife/sledge helps to remove soils that cling to the disc.
- Hub helps the dick to overcome obstacles like rocks. outcrops, stumps etc;
- Frame / Bame holds discs in position and bears additional weight for greater depth
- Furrow wheel /balancing disc - balances the plough / keeps plough from toppling:
- Coupling point provides point of attachment to the tractor;
- Standard carries the disc and other associated parts.
(d) Advantages of Disc plough (ii) are:
- It overcomes obstacles like stones and stumps more readily.
- lt can be used in more difficult soils, e.g. clay or sticky soils.
Disadvantages of Mould board plough are
- It loses its share point when in contact with an obstruction.
- It predisposes soil to erosion / soil compaction takes place when used often.
