(ii) Outline the steps involved in the traditional method of producing specimen K

Explanation

(a)(I) Uses of specimens I and J

Specimen I (Wheelbarrow) -

  • For transporting farm inputs e.g. seeds, seedlings, feeds, fertilizer around a farm
  • For transporting farm produce e.g. harvested crops, animal produce
  • For carrying farm tools and working materials around a farm
  • For carrying farm refuse out of the farm

Specimen J (File) -

  • For sharpening blade of farm tools
  • For smoothening rough surfaces of farm implements

(iI) General ways of maintaining specimens I (Wheelbarrow) and J (File) -

  • Clean after use/wash and dry after use
  • Replace worn-out parts
  • Store/keep in cool, dry place
  • Paint/greases to prevent rusting of metal parts
  • Keep wooden handle away from termites

(b) (i) Botanical names of crops from which specimens K(Palm oil) and L (Cotton lint) were obtained

  • Specimen K: Elaeis guincensis
  • Specimen L: Gossypium spp/ Any specific species

(ii) Steps involved in the traditional method of producing specimen K( Palm oil) -

  • Boil the fruits
  • Pound the boiled fruits in a mortar
  • Add water to the mixture
  • Stir the mixture vigorously
  • Wash and remove the fibre/nuts
  • Separate the oil from water by floatation
  • Boil the crude liquid
  • Separate the oil from water
  • Re-heat the oil to eliminate any trace of water by evaporation
