Democritus was a Greek philosopher who
was the first person to use the term atom (atomos: meaning indivisible). He thought that
if you take a piece of matter and divide it and
continue to divide it you will eventually come
to a point where you could not divide it any
more.

Democritus was a Greek philosopher who was the first person to use the term atom (atomos: meaning indivisible).
The history of the atom begins around 450 B.C. with a Greek philosopher named Democritus (see Figure below). Democritus wondered what would happen if you cut a piece of matter, such as an apple, into smaller and smaller pieces. He thought that a point would be reached where matter could not be cut into still smaller pieces. He called these "uncuttable" pieces atomos. This is where the modern term atom comes from.
