Beats are produced when two notes of nearly equal frequencies, f₁&f₂ (nb. f₁> f₂), but equal amplitude traveling in the same direction at the same velocity are superposed.


A rise and fall in intensity of sound is heard.


The Beat frequency (f₁—f₂ ) is the frequency at which the amplitude pulsates.


Bᶠ=f₁-f₂=270—255=15Hz
