The Management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has released an official circular addressing concerns and misinformation surrounding the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), particularly regarding the payment of monthly upkeep allowance and the student loan application process.
In the statement issued by the Directorate of Public Affairs, the University clarified several important issues affecting NELFUND beneficiary students.

The University emphasized that the responsibility for the payment of monthly upkeep allowance lies solely with NELFUND, although it operates under the guidance of the institution.
According to the circular, the allowance is strictly tied to the official NELFUND calendar, which runs from January to December each year. Consequently, the upkeep allowance for the 2024/2025 academic session officially ended in December 2025.
Students were informed that there are no outstanding payments for that session. However, the University assured beneficiaries that individual payment records would be reviewed and updated on their respective loan dashboards.
The payment for the 2025/2026 session will begin only after the completion of necessary procedures, including data upload, application processing, verification, and disbursement of institutional charges.
The University further disclosed that returning students who benefited from the scheme in the previous session have been automatically migrated to the Students Loan Application System (SLAS) for the 2025/2026 academic session.
For newly admitted students of the 2024/2025 session, their data had earlier been submitted to NELFUND. However, due to technical issues on the NELFUND portal, many students were not successfully uploaded. To address this, the University has commenced manual uploads to ensure all eligible students are captured.
In addition, BUK has secured an extension of the loan application deadline from NELFUND. The new deadline is now set for April 15, 2026.

The University strongly urged students to disregard any misleading information and rely only on official communications released by the institution.
