A rectangular picture 6cm by 8cm is enclosed by a frame $$\frac{1}{2}$$cm wide. Calculate the area of the frame

• A. 15sq.cm
• B. 20sq.cm
• C. 13sq.cm
• D. 16sq.cm
• E. 17sq.cm
##### Explanation

Area of the rectangular picture = L x B = 8 x 6

= 48 sq.cm.

Area of the whole surface (which is gotten by adding $$\frac{1}{2}$$ on every side to the original picture size) is 9 x 7 = 63 sq. cm

area of the frame is 63 - 48

= 15 sq. cm

• Sam4christ: since the picture is enclosed by a frame 1/2 cm wide, you increase the dimensions by 1/2cm round the picture. so the length becomes 8+1/2+1/2 = 9 and the breadth becomes 6+1/2+1/2 = 7cm.
so the area of the frame becomes 9 x 7=63
and the area of the picture, 8 x 6 = 48
therefore the area of the enclosed part = 63-48 =15
hope you find the explanation helpful
