What grammatical rule was the source of disagreement between the MD and the principal?
The grammatical rule that was the source of disagreement is the "subject-verb agreement rule" with the expression "Ade as well as Jide comes vs. come." Mr Guta and the MD believed that Mr Fafore had taught the children the wrong thing when he instructed his students to write "Ade as well as Jide comes" in their notes. This was the reason Mr Fafore was sacked. However, the principal reveals to the MD later on that this expression is indeed accurate because when the construction "as well as" is used to join two noun subjects together, the singular verb (comes) is used. This can be found in chapter six of the novel.
