Explanation

a(1) Lazarus of Bethany, brother to Mary and Martha, was ill.

(2) His sisters sent message to inform Jesus that Lazarus whom he loved was ill.

(3) Jesus said that the illness would not end in death, rather, it was to glorify God.

(4) Jesus stayed two days longer when he heard of what happened.

(5) Jesus then informed his disciples that Lazarus had fallen asleep.

(6) He said that he was going to wake him up.

(7) The disciples said that if he had fallen asleep, then he would be alright.

(8) They did not understand the expression as being dead.

(9) Jesus told them that Lazarus was dead.

(10) Thomas called on his fellow disciples that they should go with Jesus to die with him.

(11) Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days before Jesus arrived.

(12) Jesus had come to console Mary and Martha.

(13) Martha met Jesus and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

(14) Jesus told her that her brother would rise again.

(15) Martha said that would be on the day of resurrection.

(16) Jesus said that he was the resurrection and the life.

(17) Anybody who believed in Jesus, though he died yet shall live.

(18) Jesus asked if Martha believed what he said about himself.

(19) Martha said that she believed Jesus as the Christ, the son of God.

(20) Martha called Mary who said to Jesus "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

(21) When Jesus saw her weeping, he was moved and asked of where Lazarus was laid.

(22) It was shown to Jesus and he wept.

(23) Jesus ordered that the stone at the mouth of the tomb should be rolled off.

(24) Jesus thanked God for answered prayers.

(25) He called out Lazarus in a loud voice and the dead man came out alive.

(26) Many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed.

 

(b) Lesson:

(i) Believers in Jesus shall live for ever.

(ii) Jesus is resurrection and life.

(iii) Jesus has ultimate power over death.

(iv) Jesus is concerned about the well-being of man.
